Governor McDonnell Announces IKEA Subsidiary Supplier to Establish First U.S. Operation in Pittsylvania County

~ Axxor Group to invest $4.96 million and create 31 new jobs ~

Governor Met with Company Officials during 2010 European Trade Mission

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that Axxor Group, a Netherlands-based company that designs, produces, and sells honeycomb made from paper and water-based glues, will invest $4.96 million to establish its first U.S. operation, Axxor N.A., in Pittsylvania County. The company, which will be located in the Ringgold East Industrial Park, will enter the U.S. market to supply honeycomb core that is used in IKEA subsidiary Swedwood North America’s product line. Swedwood North America is located in nearby Cane Creek Centre, an industrial park jointly developed by Pittsylvania County and the City of Danville. The project will create 31 new jobs. Virginia successfully competed against North Carolina for the project.

Governor McDonnell met with officials at Axxor Group in the Netherlands during his European Marketing Trip in July 2010.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell said, “Swedwood North America was a transformational project for Southern Virginia, and Axxor Group’s investment in Pittsylvania County is an outgrowth of that partnership. When any company establishes a large operation in Virginia we immediately strive to use their presence to draw potential suppliers to the same area. That is what has happened here. Axxor N.A. will supply a component used in IKEA products made at nearby Swedwood. As its first U.S. operation, Axxor Group will now be able to impact the North American market. Announcement’s like today’s are how you, project by project, build a dynamic, interconnected and thriving regional economy. And the result is more good jobs for our citizens.”

“The Governor and I met with Axxor Group in the Netherlands last summer during his European Marketing Mission, and discussed potential investment in Virginia,” said Jim Cheng, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade. “It is gratifying that this announcement is a product of that meeting, and we warmly welcome Axxor N.A. to the Commonwealth.”

Dutch engineer Wieger Wiegersma started Axxion Industries in 1991 in Holland. Axxor developed the continuous honeycomb production system step by step into the Single Step Core system of today, called the Axxor SSC system. This system is capable of producing honeycomb in an extremely efficient way with all means of process-controlled production. Today the Axxor Group is selling to a majority of the door industry, the furniture industry, automotive suppliers, construction material producers and packaging companies. The Axxor Group partnered with U.S. entrepreneur Robert Boerrigter, who will lead Axxor N.A.

“We at Axxor N.A. are very pleased to establish our base in Virginia,” said Boerrigter. “The proximity and our commitment to Swedwood were our starting point, and the proactive and professional business environment that Virginia offered heavily influenced our final decision. In addition to Swedwood, we expect to be serving many other businesses and industries from this facility.”

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Pittsylvania County to secure the project for Virginia. Governor McDonnell approved a $50,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Pittsylvania County with the project. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $100,000 in Tobacco Region Opportunity Funds for the project. The company is eligible to receive benefits from the Virginia Enterprise Zone Program, administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. Through its Virginia Jobs Investment Program, the Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide funding and services to support the company’s recruitment, training and retraining activities.

“Pittsylvania County is extremely pleased with Axxor N.A.’s decision to locate their North American manufacturing plant in the Ringgold East Industrial Park,” said Tim Barber, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. “This project has taken almost two years, but Axxor N.A. and the Economic Development office continued to overcome the obstacles and bring it to reality. This is also a fine example of the commitment of the Board of Supervisors to economic development and job creation. The bottom line is that Axxor N.A. will add to the County’s tax base, occupy a vacant building, and bring much needed employment opportunities to the citizens of Pittsylvania County and Danville.”

“This is another great day for Danville, Pittsylvania County and Virginia,” said Delegate Danny Marshall, a member of the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. “Thanks to Axxor for bringing 31 new jobs and $4.96 million in investment to our area.”

“Today’s announcement that Axxor Group will establish its first U.S. operation in Pittsylvania County is great news for Southside, and I want to thank Governor McDonnell for his leadership and work on this project,” said U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt (VA-5). “This investment will help create 31 new jobs in the area at a time when we need it most and is another positive step forward as we all work to get our economy back on track.”

Governor McDonnell Announces Microsoft Expansion in Mecklenburg County

~Original Project in 2010 was Largest Economic Investment in History of Southern Virginia; Up to $500 Million Investment Created 50 Jobs~

$150 million Expansion will Create 10 Additional New Jobs; Continue Growth of Company in County

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that Microsoft Corp. will invest an additional $150 million to expand their generation data center (Gen4) site in Mecklenburg County. The company will build an additional facility and add 21 MW of electric power capacity to the site. The project will create 10 new jobs. Microsoft’s original project in 2010 involved an investment of up to $499 million and 50 new jobs.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell said, “In 2010 I announced Microsoft’s plans to establish its most advanced data center in Mecklenburg County, which represented the largest economic investment in Southern Virginia history. Just one year later, the company is making another significant investment to expand the operation site and add electric power capacity. Securing this state-of-the-art data center was an important win for the Commonwealth, and additional growth will further establish Virginia as an Information Technology leader.”

“As a crucial corporate partner to Southern Virginia, I congratulate Microsoft Corp. on this additional investment in its Mecklenburg County site,” said Jim Cheng, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade. “The company’s innovative data center design increases efficiency of operations, and this expansion will enhance the high-tech capabilities already in place as Microsoft continues to grow its operation.”

Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq “MSFT”) is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

“Microsoft is excited to once again expand its cloud infrastructure and services capacities in Boydton,” said Dayne Sampson, corporate vice president, Microsoft’s Global Foundation Services group. “We greatly appreciate the work that Virginia’s Governor and local officials have done to make the Commonwealth a great place for Microsoft to continue to invest in to enable the best possible delivery of services to our current and future customers.”

“In 2010 when Microsoft announced its decision to locate in Mecklenburg County it did that for a good reason,” said Glenn Barbour, Chairman of the Mecklenburg County Board of Supervisors. “They saw in Mecklenburg County a progressive and business friendly environment. A County that was prepared to take its economic development into the future and provide a better economy for its citizens. Considering this economic climate the new announcement by Microsoft is astounding. We extend our well wishes for the future of Microsoft and appreciate its confidence in Mecklenburg County as a local government willing to provide for its needs now and in the future. Thanks to Wayne Carter, Angie Kellett and all the other staff of Mecklenburg County for their untiring efforts to expand our economy and grow our technology sector.

"Today’s announcement that Microsoft will make another investment to expand their operation in Boydton is great news for Mecklenburg County and Southern Virginia,” said Congressman Robert Hurt. “Not only will this expansion bring much needed jobs and economic growth to the area, but it will also help ensure that Virginia remains at the forefront of the high-tech industry.”

“I believe that Microsoft has made this additional investment to the Mecklenburg site because they have found the region a good place to do business and the County and community have been good partners with which to work,” said Senator Frank M. Ruff, Jr. “We all look forward to a long lasting relationship that will serve the company and community well."

“I am pleased that Microsoft has seen fit to expand their current business operations in Mecklenburg County, including the new investment of $150 million in plant infrastructure and equipment and the 10 new jobs to this community,” said Delegate Tommy Wright.

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell today announced that Spiniello Co., a leader in underground infrastructure construction, will establish an operation in Dinwiddie County. The facility will produce cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP) liners to repair underground utilities, ultimately creating 35 new jobs.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell said, “I warmly welcome Spiniello to Virginia, and to Dinwiddie County. Our lower operating costs first attracted the company to the Commonwealth, and ultimately Dinwiddie offered an available building that matched Spiniello’s current and future needs. As a leader in the CIPP industry and an established business since 1922, I am confident that the company will continue this path of success in Virginia. ”

“It is always significant when a company establishes its first operation in Virginia,” said Jim Cheng, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade. “Dinwiddie County is the right fit for Spiniello, and 35 new employment opportunities is welcome news for the region.”

Headquartered in Livingston, New Jersey, Spiniello has been at the forefront of underground infrastructure construction for nearly a century. Spiniello has established a client base that spans the public and private sectors, serving businesses of every size and industry, municipal, state and federal government agencies, every branch of the U.S. military, public and private water utilities, and a range of global organizations, including the World Bank. Spiniello focuses on making every project as safe, efficient and economical as possible. The company has a long history of innovation, applying the latest technologies, construction methods and safety practices within its operations.

“After a thorough review of several possible locations throughout the country, Virginia offers an abundant labor force and appears to be an ideal climate for economic growth,” said EJ Solimine, Executive Vice President of Spiniello Companies. “Virginia represents an excellent opportunity to increase our cured-in-place business. We feel confident our relocation to the Commonwealth is a significant investment to ensure our company’s growth in the future.”

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Dinwiddie County and Virginia’s Gateway Region to secure the project for Virginia. Through its Virginia Jobs Investment Program, the Virginia Department of Business Assistance (VDBA) will provide funding and services to support the company’s recruitment and training activities.

“Dinwiddie County is pleased with Spiniello’s decision to invest in the County,” said The Honorable Doretha Edwards Moody, Chair of the Dinwiddie County Board of Supervisors. This investment will diversify the County’s tax base as well as provide employment opportunities for our citizens.”

Governor McDonnell Announces 40 New Jobs in Henry County

Applied Felts to invest $6 million to expand operation
Applied Felts to invest $6 million to expand operation

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that Applied Felts, the world’s largest independent manufacturer of quality felt liners for the cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP) industry, will invest $6 million to expand its operation in Henry County. The project will create 40 new jobs.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell said, “Applied Felts is a true Virginia success story. The company established operations in Henry County nearly 15 years ago with nine people, and now employs 128 full-time. This investment and expansion creates 40 more valuable employment opportunities in a dynamic region that is on the rebound economically.”

“Henry County and the surrounding region are on a great upward trajectory,” said Jim Cheng, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade. “Just last week the Governor announced 539 new jobs for Henry County, and today brings great news of another 40 jobs. Applied Felts has experienced significant success and growth at this location, and I congratulate the company on further expansion.”

As the world’s leading felt liner manufacturer, Applied Felts, a subsidiary of U.K.-based W.E. Rawson Group, has successfully relined more than 35 million linear feet of pipe using the CIPP rehabilitation process. Offering complete end-to-end custom manufacturing capabilities and products that are ISO-9002 certified, Applied Felts has more than three decades of expertise in the industry and is dedicated to ensuring its liners seamlessly integrate into customers’ CIPP process. From the selection of the finest fibers and coatings to the finished product, every Applied Felts liner is custom-designed to meet exact specifications.

“With the rapid deterioration of our country’s underground storm drain and sewer system infrastructure, the demand for rehabilitation processes that are cost-effective and cause minimal disruption to our citizens bodes well for the continued growth of our company,” said Charlie Mattox, General Manager for Applied Felts. “As the leading supplier of CIPP products in the U.S., this expansion will insure our competitive edge is maintained within our industry.”

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Henry County and the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation to secure the project for Virginia. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $175,000 in Tobacco Region Opportunity Funds for the project. The company is eligible to receive benefits from the Virginia Enterprise Zone Program, administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. Through its Virginia Jobs Investment Program, the Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide funding and services to support the company’s recruitment and training activities.

“Applied Felts is an old friend that just keeps getting better,” said Debra Buchanan, Chairman of the Henry County Board of Supervisors. “Its growth in the past 15 years is remarkable, and we look forward to even more success down the road. The success of Applied Felts is a perfect example of what can be accomplished in Henry County.”

“I’m glad that the Commission was able to work with Governor McDonnell and VEDP to bring this expansion to our community,” said Senator Roscoe Reynolds, a Commissioner of The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. “Investments made by the Commission continue to provide job opportunities in Southside and Southwest Virginia, where the jobs are badly needed.”

Governor McDonnell Announces 150 New Jobs in Charlotte County

~ Genesis Products, Inc. to expand former Appomattox River Manufacturing Company ~

Virginia successfully competed against Georgia and Mississippi for the project

RICHMOND – Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that Genesis Products, Inc., will invest $2.5 million to expand the former Appomattox River Manufacturing Company operation in Charlotte County. The company manufactures doors, cabinet parts, moldings and wood panels for pre-fabricated home, recreational vehicle, kitchen cabinet and furniture manufacturing industry. The project will save 52 jobs and create 150 new jobs. Virginia successfully competed against Georgia and Mississippi for the project.

Speaking about today’s announcement, Governor McDonnell said, “I warmly welcome Genesis Products to Charlotte County and Virginia. The prior relationship between these two companies led Genesis Products to purchase Appomattox River Manufacturing Company and expand operations. Both companies manufacture similar products, so the existing facility meets all of Genesis’ infrastructure needs. Not only does the rebounding region gain 150 new jobs, 52 valuable jobs are saved. ”

“Southern Virginia continues to grow its wood products industry cluster, and Genesis Products is a great fit,” said Jim Cheng, Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade. “Not only will an existing facility in Charlotte County be kept in operation, the company will also expand and add new employment opportunities.”

Founded in August 2002 and headquartered in Elkhart, Indiana, Genesis Products’ primary customer base is focused on the RV, Mobile Home, kitchen cabinet and furniture manufacturing industries. Genesis materials ship weekly to companies throughout the United States. With 140 employees and four core product lines, Genesis operates with a single mindset to service customers and to exceed expectations.

Commenting on the acquisition, CEO Jonathan Wenger said, "Genesis strives to maintain a very close relationship with our customers. As we continue to evaluate additional product lines to add to our core business, we always end up asking ourselves one key question—how can we do this better? We’re really excited to begin this expansion into Virginia and partner with Appomattox. Their team really knows what they are doing so we’re eager to continue to add value to an already successful company.”

The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Charlotte County to secure the project for Virginia. Governor McDonnell approved a $250,000 grant from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund to assist Charlotte County with the project. The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission approved $300,000 in Tobacco Region Opportunity Funds for the project. The company is eligible for rail access funding from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation. Through its Virginia Jobs Investment Program, the Virginia Department of Business Assistance (VDBA) will provide funding and services to support the company’s recruitment and training activities.

With much enthusiasm about Genesis Products' decision to locate to Charlotte County, David M. Guill, Chairman of the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors said, "Charlotte County has been working with Appomattox River Manufacturing since 1995 and considers them a valuable, profitable and reputable company. The acquisition by Genesis Products, Inc. will continue to strengthen and boost the local economy by preserving existing jobs and creating new jobs with its new product lines".

"We are pleased that the quality of Appomattox River Manufacturing has been recognized by Genesis Products leadership,” said Senator Frank M. Ruff, Jr., a member of the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. “Genesis is also known for quality products. I have no doubt that this will be a successful opportunity for both Genesis and the region.”
