Donnie C hid in the shadows of his gift, singing and writing as a child. After 10 years of being away from home Donnie C decides that he wants to debut his music career back home. In December of 1970 Larry Shook was a young whipper snapper of 17 years old when he went to work for Ken Powell at NAPA. At that time the store was located on Railroad Avenue in Keysville. In the early 1980s the NAPA store was moved to King Street. In 1987, Larry had the opportunity to purchase the store and the contents. So off to the bank he went! It was not long after that Larry had signed the papers and was in the business for himself. The store was moved again in 1999 when the old Star Value building came up for sale. This was the best move that could have happened. The advantage of more parking and more inventory space has been a great help. For the seventh consecutive year the Southside Messenger brought home awards from the Virginia Press Association’s Annual Awards banquet. Ben Lansing won 3rd place in the Illustration category for his cartoon “Out of Order.” Evan Jones won 3rd place in the breaking news category for his photo of an accident involving a tractor and a Cadillac.

A reward of up to $1000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for an assault that occurred near the intersection of Buffalo St. and Grove St. in the Town of Farmville on April 15, 2012. At approximately 12:30 a.m. two male subjects were walking on Grove St., near the intersection with Buffalo St., when two vehicles stopped nearby. Two black males exited the vehicles and assaulted the two men. The vehicles were described as being a small silver colored sedan and a white Chevrolet pickup with gold trim. The sedan was being driven by a black female. One victim had to be transported to Centra Southside Community Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries.
